Hopes for $1bn in four-wheeler revenue

Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang is doing what he does best – trying to talk up Tegra. In a recent interview he said the company has high hopes for car infotainment systems and Shield, Bloomberg reports.

Nvidia started taking orders for Shield just a couple of weeks ago and Huang says it is going quite well.

“The reception has been great,” said Huang. “If we sell some, that’s fantastic as well, but it’s not the fundamental purpose. The fundamental purpose is to get great games on Android on Tegra.”

In addition to bringing great games to Android, Shield could help Nvidia peddle its reference designed phones and tablets in the future.

Huang also said Nvidia’s revenue from car infotainment systems is doubling every year and it now stands at $100. He believes it will eventually hit $1 billion, which sounds very impressive given the relatively low volumes and the fact that Nvidia isn’t the only provider of chips for such systems.

Cheap cars still don’t ship with fancy infotainment systems as standard, and if Huang is right, we could see powerful systems trickle down to entry level cars over the next couple of years.
