Hurricane Sandy brings down ISPs, websites

Huff Post, Gawker, Gizmodo

Hurricane Sandy has already claimed dozens of lives in the Caribbean and North America, and the worst is yet to come. Millions are without power and parts of New York, New Jersey and Delaware are starting to resemble the canals of Venice.

The storm has also unleashed its fury on the internet. Needless to say, services are down in many affected areas and the storm surge has flooded numerous businesses as well. Datagram, a major ISP based in lower Manhattan, went down due to flooding. The company hosts Huffington Post, Gawker, BuzzFeed, Gizmodo and a bunch of other sites. Datagram managed to partially restore services, but some sites are still down. At press time we are unable to reach Huff Post, Gizmodo or Gawker.

The New York Stock Exchange was shut down yesterday as a precaution, along with NASDAQ and much of New York’s mass transit system. We are sure the city that never sleeps will live up to its name once again, and recover in no time, but Sandy has already taken a massive human and financial toll across the eastern seaboard.

We are also hearing about intermittent MSN Live outages, but it is unclear whether Sandy is to blame.
