AMD denies making chips with IBM

Big Blue was just a consultant

AMD has denied a claim that IBM had started to make chips on contract basis for the outfit.

During an event for financial analysts last week, AMD's chief executive Rory Read named IBM as one of AMD's manufacturing partners.  He said that it helped to solve supply problems of the company's latest chips. This was seen as meaning htat AMD had made Big Blue  a manufacturing partner.

But now AMD is saying that IBM only provided consulting services to Globalfoundries, contract maker of AMD's microprocessors, so that to enable it to boost yields of chips produced using 32nm silicon-on-insulator process technology. According to X-Bit labs, AMD said that IBM has given some consulting support to GF, as far as I know they are not producing chips for us.

While IBM can produce the same chips as Globalfoundries, this is not the case with AMD's central processing units and accelerated processing units as they are exclusively made at Globalfoundries, the spokesperson said.
