Core i7 stays reassuringly expensive

Intel has trimmed its CPU pricing somewhat, and some of the most popular Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo, Pentium and Celeron CPUs are affected. Prices of the high end Core i7 series remain untouched.

The cuts range from about 10 to 20 percent, and the new pricing is sure to put a bit more pressure on AMD's cheap Phenom II and Athlon II series, and create a bit more room for Intel's upcoming Core series CPUs and rebrands.

The Q9400 has dropped from $213 to $183, while the Q8400 slipped to $163. Core 2 Duos and Celerons saw a more substantial cut, with the E7500 falling to $113 from $133, and the Celeron E1500 getting a 19 percent cut from $53 to $43.
