Intel leaks Kaby Lake details

by on01 November 2016

Bit of a yawn

Chipzilla has leaked details of its coming Kaby Lake CPUs through a product change notification (PCN) document, which was intended for manufacturing partners.

According to Techspot which spotted the PCN, Intel lists ten desktop-class Kaby Lake Core processors and one Xeon product. The list also includes their base clock speeds and product codes.

That said, there was not a lot we did not expect to see. Chipzilla is using the same naming scheme to Skylake. That means K-designators for unlocked 95W parts, T-designators for low-power 35W parts, and naked as nature intended for 65W parts.

It appears likely that Core i7 products receiving four cores and eight threads, while Core i5 CPUs get four cores and four threads. Cheaper Core i3 parts will be dual-core with four threads.

Intel appears to be offering a 100 to 300 MHz increase in clock speeds without boosting power consumption thanks to the 14nm+ manufacturing process.
At the top end, we're looking at the Z270 chipset, while we can also expect H270, B250, Q270 and Q250. Additionally, Intel revealed the C422 for servers and X299 chipsets for enthusiasts.

It is not particularly exciting, and nothing like what is being rumored for AMD’s Zen chips. Of course we will not know what any of these are truly like until next year.
