Firewall extended to the individual
The
glorious People's Republic of China has decided to extend its Great Firewall
of China censorship system to individual PCs.
Apparently it seems that
blocking content to the country is not enough, and China's government wants
all PCs sold in the country from July 1 to be loaded with software that
blocks certain websites.
Software called "Green Dam-Youth Escort" which we
guess loses a bit in the translation, mostly targets porn. Its aim is to
keep China's youth safe from the perils of the opposite sex naked. The
software connects to a database when the machine is switched on.
China's
Ministry of Industry and Information Technology put the requirement in a
notice on May 19 but it has not yet been publicised. However we guess that is
because the Chinese do not want their hackers to know that the stuff is
there, otherwise a bit of code that circumvents it will be distributed in
seconds.
