Fake email
Nigerian spammers had a
go out of conning UK ministry officials, ruling Labour Party members, and
constituents while the British Justice secretary was visiting the country.
The
spammers sent an email claiming that Straw had lost his wallet while in the
country and asked them to wire him £2,000.
The fake email was written under
the heading the Right Hon Jack Straw MP, said: "I misplaced my wallet on my way
to the hotel where my money and other valuable things were kept."
The hotmail
account was one that Straw used to deal with constituency matters. Most of
the people who knew Straw spotted the deception. The email claimed he was in
Lagos for a project called Empowering Youth to Fight Racism, though he was in
fact in Britain.
One constituent apparently replied to the e-mail, but did
not offer cash.
