Nvidia-exclusive effects under the bonnet

Nvidia is thick as thieves with Ubisoft and it does not come as a surprise that the upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity will integrate Nvida's GameWorks, or at least some parts of it.Nvidia users will see some exclusive ambient occlusion, temporal anti-aliasing, soft shadows and GeometryWorks tessellation.

Coming on November 11, Assassin's Creed Unity is the latest installment in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series and probably one of the most anticipated games for this year.

The main feature of Nvidia's GameWorks integrated in Assassin's Creed Unity, is the Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion Plus (HBAO+), which is Nvidia's exclusive way of using Ambient Occlusion. The effect will darken areas which have incorrect lighting due to limitation of Global Illumination. It uses Nvidia's GPUs to analyze the scene and geometry in order to provide better ambient and scene lighting.

In addition to the HBAO+, Ubisoft has also implemented the GeometryWorks Advanced Tessellation, Temporal Anti-alising (TXAA) and the Percentage-Closer Soft Shadows (PCSS). The TXAA and the PCSS were already seen in some previously launched games including the Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The GeometryWorks Advanced Tessellation on the other hand is, according to Nvidia, like DirectX 11 tessellation but works better with HBAO+ and the PCSS.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Unity already impressed us with its incredible graphics so we will be probably also impressed with these Nvidia exclusive GameWorks effects when the game launches next month.
