Shield tablet gets 1.2.1 software update

by on21 October 2014

Improves 5GHz WiFi, charging

Nvidia has just released an update for its Shield tablet and some might be disappointed to learn that this is not Android 5.0. Lollipop comes later, Nvidia's Shield tablet sticks to Android 4.4.2 and the company already confirmed that it will roll out Android 5.0 in the future via an over the air update.

The new 682.91MB heavy update solves three things. It should improve WiFi performance on 5GHz band, has performance optimizations for encrypted devices and fixes intermittent charging issues. Nvidia's previous 1.2 update was launched less than three weeks ago and overall you can count on regular updates when it comes to Nvidia's own Android devices. WiFi performance is really important for Shield tablet as you need a 5GHz network to have reliable Gamestream functionality on the tablet, especially if your PC and TV are not in the same room. We haven’t noticed any issues with charging, but obviously the update addresses some potential problems.

HTC said that it plans to release Android 5.0 for its HTC One M8 and M7 phones within 90 days after the official release of Android 5.0. We expect to see the Nexus 9 first Android 5.0 tablet on the market in first days of November and that should be the birth date of Android 5.0 aka Lollipop.

With that in mind we should see HTC updating its phones by late January 2015 and one can only hope that some other than Nexus device might get the android version a bit earlier.
