As a part of a retailer promotion

In addition to announcing the official availability of the Radeon R9 285, which we already covered in detail when it was announced, AMD has also pulled a quite surprising move by dropping the price of its dual-GPU flagship, the Radeon R9 295X2, down to US $999.

As per Techpowerup.com, the price drop of the Radeon R9 295X2 dual-GPU graphics card, from the original US $1,499 down to US $999, comes as a part of retailer promotion. AMD also did not waste an opportunity to step on Nvidia's toes by announcing that this promotion will be available to consumers and not just OEMs.

In case you somehow managed to miss it, the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 is based on two fully-enabled 28nm Hawaii GPUs and pack a total of 5760 Stream Processors, 352 TMUs, 128 ROPs and 8GB of GDDR5 memory connected to dual 512-bit memory interface. In order to cope with temperatures coming from those two GPUs, AMD decided to equip the R9 295X2 with a hybrid liquid+air cooler co-developed with Asetek. While the GPUs are handled by a 120mm radiator, the center placed fan takes care of the VRM, memory and the PLX bridge chip.

Unfortunately, the report did not reveal any specific details regarding the retailer-specific promotional price cut, but we are quite sure that this will include several big European and US based retailers/e-tailers so we will keep our eyes open for more details.
