Pictures and specs revealed

LG G Watch R is the official name of LG’s new Android Wear based watch. It is now official and at first glimpse it looks good, some may argue even better than highly anticipated Moto 360.

The LG G Watch R looks much like a regular high-end watch but to be honest the PR shots we got look a bit too good to be true. We will have to wait and see it live before we can pass judgment.

Watch R powered by Qualcomm

The watch shares a similar specification to the LG G Watch, the company’s rectangular smartwatch. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 and has 4GB eMMC and 512MB RAM. The battery size increased from the original 400mAh to 410mAh and you will need a phone running Android 4.3 or above to explore the options of this watch.

The watch has a 9-axis Gyro/ Accelerometer/ Compass, barometer, PPG sensors and comes only in black. There might be some additional colours at a later date, but officially black is the only colour. The watch is dust and water resistant (IP67) which is definitely something you want in a watch. The watch can be submerged in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes, which is not bad but it is not even close to a proper sports watch.

Compact design, 1.3-inch display

The most important part, the display, is a 1.3-inch P-OLED unit with a resolution of 320 x 320 which is slightly smaller than the 1.5-inch display on the Moto 360. However, LG’s watch looks rather nice in the press shots and it appears to be more compact than the Motorola. P-OLED stands for Plastic OLED but we still do not know the brightness rating or the viewing angles.

The watch comes with a 22mm calf skin leather strap. We prefer metal ones, but they would probably make the watch to heavy. There is no word on availability or price the watch should appear in Q4 2014.

The watch will be on display at the upcoming IFA tradeshow that takes place in Berlin from September 5th till September 10th. So far it looks like LG G Watch R might have a good chance of taking on the competition, as it features a traditional design just like the Moto 360 which already has a legion of fans despite the fact that it has not launched yet.
