Mediatek to shift focus in 2014

Tablets, high-end LTE parts

Chip designer Mediatek is planning to shift its attention from frugal smartphone chips to tablet SoCs and LTE enabled chipsets for smartphones.

In an interview with TelecomTiger, Mediatek general manager of international sales and marketing Finbarr Moynihan said the company wants to “democratize” smartphones and bring them to new markets. He noted that five to six billion people in India, China, Asia and Africa are moving into the middle class and generating demand for smart devices on a budget.

“Our focus would be on the tablets next year, from entry level tablets to high end tablets. We would be focusing more on LTE (4G) solutions in 2014. High end smartphones would be our target as well,” said Moynihan.

We already reported that Mediatek is planning to double its tablet SoC shipments next year, but it is somewhat surprising that it is also targeting the high-end segment. The company has already announced its first A15 big.LITTLE processor and it seems like we are bound to see more high-end products next year.

Mediatek will launch six to eight new tablet parts next year, along with the usual dose of mid-range phone chips and perhaps one or two high-end parts. Taking on the likes of Qualcomm and Nvidia in the high end space won’t be easy, but Mediatek has a few things going for it.
