The little printer that could

Polaroid, a company which seemed on the verge of extinction not that long ago, is set to make a big comeback with its portable pocket-sized photo printer known as the PoGo.

The PoGo uses Zink’s "zero-ink" technology, which consists of special paper that contains layers of heat-activated color dye crystals a few microns thick. PoGo weighs only eight ounces and is a mere 4.7 inches x 2.8 inches by 0.9 inches, and will be available in your local retail store on July 6th for only US$150.  Now you can print digital photos on the spot, rather than waiting until you get home.

PoGo can print from a digital camera over a USB cable, or from a cellphone camera using Bluetooth. When an image is sent from either device, the image will appear in a minute or less in a 2-inch by 3-inch hard copy print with an adhesive backing for sticking in a scrapbook or other appropriate happy place (we don’t recommend on the outside of your car). Polaroid claims the photos are smudge-proof and waterproof.

The printer is easy to use. But not all Bluetooth capable phones are compatible with Pogo, including all of the Apple iPhone series, and older digital cameras may not support the PictBridge standard that enables direct printer connections. While the printer functions well, the quality of the photos is not great.  But then, Polaroid cameras never were known for their quality images – it was about instantaneous photos.
