Toshiba cooks up hybrid 2.5-inch drive

Written by Fudzilla staff

1TB, 5400rpm

Toshiba is proudly showing off its first hybrid hard drive, but don’t expect to see it in your new ultrabook.

It is a 9.5mm unit, so it’s not suitable for ultrabooks or other thin devices. At 1TB, it is somewhat more spacious than Seagate’s Momentus XT, but it is still just a 5400rpm drive with 8GB of NAND slapped on top.

Still, it is pretty fast and boots Windows just a few second behind similarly spec’d SSD based laptops . The new disk scores 80MB/s in Vantage video editing tests, with a total point score of 16,000, still well in HDD territory.

There is still no word on pricing or availability. More here.
