One of next gen consoles to lack optical drive

John Carmack, a man that hopefully needs no introduction, recently said that Sony will probably be the first to offer a next-gen console. He also added however, that he doesn’t expect any new ones to hit the market in the near future.

Mr. Carmack went on saying that the entire talk of who’ll be the first one to the market is “pretty divorced from the technical side of things” but also that it’s likely that Sony will want to prevent the same “360 lag” from happening to them.

It’s no secret that the current generation of hardware hasn’t quite been utilized to the maximum, and Carmack said that developers would like to see the current generation last for as long as possible.

He added how one of the successors to the current crop of consoles will ship without an optical drive, as the Xbox Live and App Store have opened the door to the future of digital distribution, and that this potential is greater than anyone expected.
