Additional slips for key holiday titles

At the rate that titles are falling off of the radar for this holiday season, it could be that gamers might not have that many choices. Sources tell us that Red Steel 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction will join the already delayed I Am Alive and Ghost Recon as titles that will slip into 2010 and not make the holiday selling season.

I Am Alive and Ghost Recon were already delayed by publisher Ubisoft till fiscal year 2010-2011, which starts for the company in April of 2010. While we don’t know when these two titles will get an official release date, it sounds like Red Steel 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction are a bit farther along and should see a release at some point between January and March of 2010.

The company is spinning the delay as necessary in the case of Red Steel 2 because the developers have requested more time to polish the title and work on the maps, and the demo did not necessarily reflect the actual quality of the rest of the game.

As for Splinter Cell Conviction, which was set to be a show case exclusive title for the Xbox 360 this holiday season, things are a bit cloudier. Our sources tell us that the exact nature of the delay is unknown outside of Ubisoft at this time.

With four titles lost for this holiday season, Ubisoft will be banking that Assassin’s Creed II, which is set for arrival on November 17th, 2009, will be as successful as the first installment in the series. Ubisoft will need it to be, as the company is adjusting their targets to deal with the delays, but it still strikes a blow at the company’s bottom line as the holiday selling season is traditionally the most important for video game publishers.
