No traction for Bionic Commando

Sales numbers at retail are a disappointment

The Bionic Commando remake of the Capcom Nintendo original just has not been able to generate any sales traction at the retail level despite having been released for over a month. While the nostalgia factor was high and the reviews have been pretty good, it just seems that buyers have passed on it.

Developed by Grin Studios in Sweden, only 27,000 units have sold within the first 30 days of release, according to various sources. Terminator Salvation, which was also developed by Grin, has not fared much better, with a reported 43,000 units sold since release according to various sources, despite less than kind reviews of the title.

Bionic Commando did experience a bit of a sales surge on the Xbox 360 once the demo was released for that platform, but it does not seem that even with a bit of a surge that sales numbers are likely to climb much higher.

The poor sales numbers for the two Grin developed titles seem to point to video game consumers being a little bit tighter with their money and making difficult choices on which games to spend money on. As we reported previously, Grin did a bit of restructuring that resulted in some layoffs once these two titles were completed, but the studio seems to be looking toward future releases.

While neither the studio nor Capcom are officially commenting on the poor sales numbers, it would seem that Nintendo nostalgia does not equal sales these days; and like many studios and publishers, they will be hard pressed not to stick with what works, as taking risks these days can lead to a lot of disappointment.
