PS2/PS3 exclusive in PAL territories

Those waiting for the new Ghostbusters title in Europe and who happen to own an Xbox 360, Wii, PC or Nintendo DS will be disappointed to find out that Atari has signed an exclusive deal with Sony for the distribution of Ghostbusters in the PAL territories for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3.

This deal means that those living in the PAL territories will only see the title arrive from Sony on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. The deal does not affect the release of the title in North America, where the title will be released on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, as well as the Xbox 360, Wii, PC and Nintendo DS. Atari will continue to handle the distribution and marketing of the North American release of the product when it launches on June 16th in North America.

In addition to the exclusive distribution of Ghostbusters for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 by Sony in the PAL territories, it was also announced today that PSP version will also be arriving sometime in the Autumn of 2009. Sony plans to have Ghostbusters on shelves in the PAL territories on June 19th.

According to Atari, the decision to work with Sony for the release of Ghostbusters outside of North America was made to maximize the impact of the title outside of North America. Sony controls the rights Ghostbusters movie titles and it is believed that in conjunction with the re-release of the movie in the Blu-ray format, the company is willing to spend major money to promote the title in the PAL territories which should lead to better sales than Atari would expect going it alone.

While the early reports on the Ghostbusters title have been surprisingly good, it will be very interesting to see how well Atari is able to do with this title that was discarded by Activision Blizzard due to their merger. It will be very interesting to see how well Atari will be able to do with this strategy and what kind of sales numbers the title will actually be able to produce. We suspect from the whispers that we are hearing that this could, in fact, be the sleeper hit of the summer.
