Not this year, but possibly in March next year

It seems that not a day goes by that we don’t have someone who claims to know someone who is “in the know” telling us that the PlayStation 3 is going to get a price cut. As we have been telling you, we don’t think it is going to happen this year; and Sony seems to at least for the moment be backing us up on this one.

Now the rumors and speculation have started again that Sony is planning to hit back with an aggressive price drop in March of 2009, according to our sources. We seem to think based on our mole tracking that this is likely the case.

Our sources are also speaking of a new stripped down bundle for the PS3 that will be part of this price cut plan in March. Given the look of the current PS3 configurations, we are just not sure how much more you could really strip it down to cut pricing. We think that it is still more likely that the price cuts will come for decreased material costs, with a likely drop in the price of the Blu-ray drive in the unit being the primary factor in the cost reduction.

The decision by Sony not to cut the price of the PS3 for this holiday season could continue to haunt the company as a missed chance to take on the rivals this holiday season, but with recent suggestions that the Wii will be in short supply that might only leave Xbox 360 and PS3 as the other choices which could, in fact, help PS3 sales this holiday season. It is too early to tell, but with the brisk sales of the Xbox 360 one has to wonder if Sony at least has some regrets by not trying to get more aggressive with the price.
