3.4GHz at 125W in Q4 2009

AMD has just launched the Phenom II X4 965 CPU and many have an issue with this 3.4GHz quad-core, as its TDP (Thermal Design Power) is at quite high, 140W to be exact.

The good news is that in Q4 2009, AMD will have a new, 125W TDP version of Phenom II X4 965. Introduction of this part also means the imminent death of Phenom II 965 140W that will reach its last order status in late Q1 2010 which is unusually short product life cycle for a CPU.

The Phenom II X4 965 looks like it will remain as the fastest quad-core from AMD in 2009 and faster revisions can be expected in 2010. AMD’s main goal is to get 32nm quad-cores as soon as possible in 2010, but we’ve learned that mid-2010 should be the best case scenario, if not even later.
