Taking on the usual suspects
Acer is planning an aggressive approach in the smartphone market, and
it expects it will be one of the top five smartphone makers in a few
years.
In order to get there, Acer needs a 6 to 7 percent market share, and
sell around 20 million smartphones in 2012. It doesn't seem like an
easy task, especially considering the competition, comprised from
industry heavyweights such as Nokia, RIM, Samsung, HTC and Apple.
Acer says smartphones are "in its DNA." The outfit is the world's top
notebook vendor, and it's the third biggest PC maker, so the smartphone
is a logical extension of its operations. Although the PC market is
contracting due to the economic downturn, smartphone shipments are
still growing, with 11.1 percent growth expected this year alone.
