November 9th, 2009
marks a significant milestone for the web’s fastest growing browser, which just
turned five years old as of today. Over the past few years, Mozilla Firefox has
proven itself worthy of internet users worldwide by successfully denting
Internet Explorer’s monopoly with an overall global market share of more than
23-percent.
While the engineers at Mozilla Corporation are likely to be
celebrating over a few martinis and loud music, they remain steadfast in their
mission to preserve the open internet as a safe and trustable work center by
removing unwanted pop-ups, potential spyware, and the unauthorized access of
personal information. According to Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe, many
younger users of the internet and their generations are becoming less aware of
the adverse risk effects that browser protections have sheltered them from.
“They take for granted that the freedom they enjoy is
forever,” he exclaimed. “I don't think it is like that. The internet is full of
promise but the future is not bright unless we make sure it is. A battle over
who 'owns' the internet and whether it should be regulated is under way and the
outcome could be hugely significant, he said.”
Since its initial launch in November 2004, Firefox has held
true to its philosophy towards stronger user security, enhanced content collaboration,
genuine simplicity and intelligent web innovation as it advances forward into
the generation of 2010 and beyond. To reflect its journey through time, the
Mozilla team has redesigned its SpreadFirefox webpage to highlight today’s
significance and has posted an interesting video clip in over 27 different
languages.
