Sony has announced plans to cut the number of its parts and materials suppliers from 2,500 to 1,200 over the next two years.
The company aims to reduce procurement costs by 20 percent this financial year, and this latest measure is merely an addition to its plan to cut fixed costs by $3.2 billion.
Sony says it plans to wrap up its supply overhaul by March 2011, and that it will increase the volume of orders from the remaining suppliers in order to cut costs.
The company's annual procurement costs are currently running at about $26 billion.
