The tech press likes to look at Google as the company with
Midas' touch, as it manages to make a profit on just about anything it
gets its hands on.
However, the Nexus One smartphone seems to be an exception. In its
first week of sales, Google's new phone found just 20,000 buyers and in
the month of January total sales amounted to a rather unimpressive
80,000 units.
Apple managed to ship more than 600,000 iPhones in its first month of
sales and even Motorola's shipments of the Droid dwarfed the nexus with
575,000 units. All this doesn't bode well for Google's new phone, but
the same can't be said of its Android OS.
Acer is reporting higher than expected shipments of its first Android
phone, dubbed Liquid. The company hopes to ship 250,000 units in the
current quarter, although its original projections were close to
150,000 units. HTC also doesn't seem to be complaining, as its Android
phones are doing even better.
One might argue that Google is a relative newcomer in the market, but
bear in mind that Apple was equally green when it launched the iPhone,
which proved to be a stunning success, much to Nick Farell's dismay.
