Netflix has confirmed plans on their roadmap to add both 1080p video and 5.1 audio to their streaming players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. (Of course, this will not be coming to the Wii, as the console does not offer HD support)

The news is surprising, considering that today the company streams those titles that are in HD in the 720p format. It is understood, however, that not all titles will be available in 1080p and 5.1 when the players are upgraded to support it. Sources indicate that only about 6% of Netflix’s current offerings offer this kind of quality, but that is likely to grow in the future.

While the company is calling the move an effort to deliver a full HD experience, the real question is how ISPs will feel about larger streaming transfers. It has been said that the greatest threat to streaming content is the demand that it places on a user’s Internet connection to deliver significant bandwidth for the content, as well as ISPs that are intolerant of that amount of data being transferred and bandwidth being monopolized by a single user.

While the news is good news for those who are seeking HD quality, we have to think that the news isn’t good for ISPs that are struggling to meet bandwidth demands now. We have to wonder who will be the first ISP that will attempt to block some of this streaming content.
