Taiwanese producers flat out
Shipments of 40-inch and larger of double-frame rate
(100Hz and 120Hz) and quadruple-frame rate (200Hz and 240Hz) LCD TV panels are
increasing rapidly according to Taiwanese analysts.
They are predicting that shipments for double frame rate
units will increase by 40 per cent and triple rate LCDs will increase by 10 per
cent. This means that manufacturers will have to make 16.9
million double frame rate units and 4.2 million units triple frame rate
machines.
According to David Hsieh, VP of DisplaySearch double- and
quadruple-frame rates have emerged as the solution to motion blur
issues. He is predicting that half of all 40-inch and larger LCD
TV panels will be double- or quadruple-frame rate panels in 2009. Panel
makers are promoting double-frame rate panels
combined with LED backlights as a combined solution to upgrade LCD TV
features,
he said. In the second quarter, 100/120 Hz and 200/240 Hz achieved
greater than a half share in several sizes like 40-inch, 46-inch,
52-inch and
above.
DisplaySearch forecasts that share in the third quarter
of 2009 of 100/120Hz and 200/240Hz frame rate will reach 17.2 per cent and 3.2
percent. In the first quarter of 2010
will increase to 21.9 per cent and 5.7 percent because LCD TV panel makers are aggressively
developing upgraded refresh rate panels for additional value.
