In a not so surprising announcement, Nintendo has officially confirmed that it has shipped more than 50 million Wii consoles worldwide.
A few weeks back ATI and IBM announced that they have shipped 50
million Wii GPUs and CPUs, so it was only a matter of time before
Nintendo put them all together and flogged them.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also said that Nintendo DS shipments
have surpassed the 100 million mark, and that Nintendo's success has
surpassed his expectations, and ours of course.
In a gesture of modesty, a trade absent in most company bosses like a
halo and angel wings on a vampire, he attributed much of Nintendo's
success to software developers. "one rule always remains the same:
Software sells hardware," said Iwata, and hats off for that.
Interestingly, Iwata revealed that more than 47 percent of DS handheld consoles were purchased by women.
