Think of the children

ISPs Verizon
, Sprint and Time Warner Cable have decided to block sites that are claimed to disseminate child pornography.

According to the New York Times, the move is part of an agreement with New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo. The move will mean that news groups and Usenet will be routinely blocked if kiddie porn images are posted on them. It is not clear if this will be a blanket ban on Usenet or boards.

Clearly, if someone wanted to get a board shut down you would accuse it of distributing porn and the biggest ISPs would shut it down. The move is dangerous in another respect. It means that for the first time the ISPs are saying that they are responsible for things that come down their tubes.

In fact, Cuomo mentioned this when he first started talking to the ISPs. It looks like his threats of charges of fraud and deceptive business practices against the ISPs paid off.
