Dell thinks that it can expand into the enterprise sector by offering pre-packed systems to establish data centres. The company is to offer a product that combines the company's server, storage, network and software products "out of the box."

Dell has just appointed itself a new enterprise business chief Marius Haas who told Reuters that Dell wanted to grab a bigger portion of the $110 billion corporate market. Dubbed Active Systems, the product is a pre-configured set of systems that can used to set up virtual desktops and private remote-computing.

The new products include the Active System 800, which combines Dell servers, storage and network gear in a pre-assembled rack that it says customers can install quickly to deploy a virtual desktop infrastructure, a private cloud or business applications.

At the same time, Dell will phase out a line of similarly integrated systems that it introduced last year under the brand vStart. Dell claims the new Active Systems offer better hardware and management capabilities than the vStart systems they'll replace.

The move is part of Dell's general desire to get away from personal computers which have been suffering due to the economic downturn. It will put it up against its much larger rival HP.

Haas said Dell has invested $12.7 billion in acquiring companies to bolster its products in the enterprise market. This includes companies like SonicWALL and AppAssure.

Haas joined Dell in August from private-equity firm KKR & Co, is leading a unit that accounts for over 30 percent of the company's total revenue and more than 50 percent of its margins. He was previously at HP.
