1,073 fixes and patches, plus 4 new features

Microsoft has released Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 1 for public Beta testing. Service Pack 3 for XP contains over 1,073 fixes and patches and four new features. After a long wait, now the general public can download and test Release Candidate 1 prior to final release.

While the fixes and patches to XP are the real start of the show, Microsoft also has added four new features which include a new Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module, Black Hole Router detection algorithm, Network Access Protection Module and a new activation scheme technology. While the new activation scheme technology might not be considered a new feature, it is there nonetheless.

Checking in at almost 350MB, Service Pack 3 for XP is said to be perhaps the final service pack for the aging Windows XP operating system. Microsoft still appears on track to deliver the final release version of Service Pack 3 in the first quarter of 2008. It is safe to assume that this will extend the usable life of Windows XP for some time, as the roll up of all of the hotfixes, patches, and bug fixes that have gone into Service Pack 3 will help speed the reloading of systems by eliminating the need to download all of the fixes from Windows Update separately once the operating system is reloaded.
