A variety of new flash devices and two MP3 players

SanDisk had a lineup of nine new products at CES. While seven of the nine new products focused on the flash memory arena, two of the new products were MP3 players in the Sansa product line.

To start with, SanDisk announced the new Vaulter Disk in 8GB, 12GB and 16GB sizes. The Vaulter is a mini PCIe flash-based module that plugs inside your PC that and divides storage functionality between the Vaulter disk and your PC hard disk. The Vaulter uses the high speed flash memory to store files that are frequently accessed.  The Vaulter captured a Best Innovations of CES 2008 Award.

Two new USB flash drives were launched:  the new Cruzer Titanium Plus USB 4GB, and the Gaming Cruzer Crossfire 8GB. The new Cruzer Titanium Plus USB 4GB is powered by BeInSync technology, which allows the USB flash drive to be synced to an online storage area provided BeInSync for backup. The Cruzer Crossfire joins the Cruzer Crossfire lineup with a new 8GB version.

SanDisk announced a new solid state disk (SDD) called the SanDisk SSD SATA 5000, offering 72GB of storage in a 1.8-inch form factor. This makes the new 72GB offering from SanDisk one of the largest offerings on a 1.8-inch form factor. The new 5000 series is based on a fifth generation design using proven NAND flash technology.

SanDisk also launched three new flash memory cards, including the high performance Extreme III SD card in an 8GB density, the SanDisk Gaming Memory Stick Pro Duo in 8GB density and the new SanDisk Video HD that are all targeted at the high definition video camera market space. The Video HD cards are available in both SDHC format, as well as the Memory Stick Pro Duo format in both 4GB and 8GB densities.

SanDisk also launched the Sansa Clip MP3 player that is designed to compete with the Apple iPod Shuffle. The biggest difference is that the Sansa Clip offers a display, where the Shuffle does not. SanDisk continues to remain committed to the marketing and design of MP3 players and the Clip is an example of that commitment with four colors, 15 hours of battery life and integrated FM radio. Unlike the Shuffle, the Clip is available in 2GB and 4GB sizes, as well as the same 1GB size that the Shuffle offers.

SanDisk View is SanDisk’s latest challenger to the Apple iPod Nano. The View offers the 16GB and 32GB sizes that the Apple iPod Nano can’t offer. The largest Nano currently is 8GB and is the second generation and SanDisk offers the View in an 8GB model as well. The real magic with the View is the microSDHC expansion slot which allows the View owner to add even more storage to the View, which is a trick Apple has yet to learn with its iPod product line. With 35 hours of music battery life and 7 hours of video battery life, the View continues to keep music or video playing. The View also offers a built-in microphone for recording and an FM tuner with 20 pre-sets. The View supports all of the major formats, including MPEG4, MP3, WMV, H.264, WMA and non-DRM AAC.

SanDisk looks to have an exciting 2008 ahead with a lot of products that could be worth your consideration. The new Sansa players look to be impressive and it will be interesting to see how they stack up against the iPod in real world testing.
