Retroid has unveiled two dual-screen Android handhelds, proving the clamshell format can be revived with enough nostalgia.
According to Notebookcheck the Pocket Duo gets the better hardware, while the cheaper Pocket Duo Lite exists for buyers who fancy two displays but fewer reasons to boast about them.
Retroid describes the Pocket Duo as offering “flagship performance and exceptional efficiency”. Its upper display is a 5.5-inch OLED panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. Beneath it sits a 4.5-inch 4:3 OLED, also running at 120Hz.
Power comes from Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Q-7790, effectively an IoT relative of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. Retroid has yet to reveal memory or storage configurations.
The Pocket Duo has a 180-degree free-stop hinge, stacked shoulder buttons, recessed symmetrical thumbsticks, tactile ABXY buttons and active cooling. It runs Android 16 and carries a 6,000mAh battery, presumably because powering two OLED screens was never going to be handled by optimism.
Retroid will offer five colours: Black, GC, 16Bit, Ice Blue and Clear Purple. Two are transparent, allowing owners to admire the electronics while pretending this is still 1998.
The Pocket Duo Lite takes the same basic idea and begins removing the expensive bits. Its 5.5-inch 16:9 upper screen drops from OLED to a 60Hz LCD. The lower display shrinks to 4.2 inches, keeps the 4:3 aspect ratio and uses another 60Hz LCD.
Retroid says the Lite targets “entry-level dual-screen users who want just the right performance at an affordable price”.
That performance comes from Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QCS6125, an IoT processor released in 2021 that closely resembles the Snapdragon 665 launched in 2019. It uses Kryo 260 CPU cores, Adreno 610 graphics, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0, so nobody will accidentally mistake the Lite for cutting-edge hardware.
The cheaper handheld runs Android 15 rather than Android 16 and swaps the Pocket Duo’s stacked shoulder controls for in-line buttons. It retains the free-stop hinge, recessed symmetrical thumbsticks and 6,000mAh battery. The same five colour choices will be available.
Both machines enter a growing collection of dual-screen Android handhelds chasing buyers who apparently looked at one portable display and felt short-changed. Retroid has not announced pricing or availability for either model, leaving the most important specification conveniently absent while it drip-feeds everything else.
