Don't overclock Intel's Core i7-7700K

If you wanted overclocking your should have bought AMD

Chipzilla has warned that those people who shelled out Core i7-7700K expecting that they could overclock it to sling their hook and just admire it in its pristine glory.

Intel i7 7700K owners have flooded the company’s official forum with countless reports and complaints about overheating issue that sends their CPUs’ temperatures shooting up to 90+ degrees Celsius with very minor computational loads and in some cases even when the processors are idling.

Intel’s latest response is to blame overclockers and that i7 7700K owners should not overclock, overvolt or de-lid their CPUs. In a statement a spokesChipzilla said:

“We appreciate the feedback you have provided, and your patience as we investigated this behaviour. The reported behaviour of the 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700K Processor, showing momentary temperature changes from the idle temperature, is normal while completing a task (like opening a browser or an application or a program).”

Intel’s internal investigation did not observe temperature variation outside of the expected behaviour and recommended specifications. For processor specifications, please refer to the Intel Core i7-7700K Processor Product Specifications.

Most motherboard manufacturers offer customisable fan speed control settings that may allow for smoother transition of fan revolutions per minute (rpm). Please consult your motherboard manufacturer’s manual or website for instructions on how to change default fan speed control settings, Chipzilla said.

“We do not recommend running outside the processor specifications, such as by exceeding processor frequency or voltage specifications, or removing of the integrated heat spreader (sometimes called ‘de-lidding’). These actions will void the processor warranty.”

As we said earlier Intel states that the temperature spikes and variations in their testing were not higher than the maximum safe temperature which is stated as 100c for the i7 7700K. But pinning the whole problem on overclocking seems to be the method Intel is focusing on. To make matters worse, Intel said that overclocking, overvolting or de-liding the CPU will mean that users will void their warranties.
