AMD prepares another round of lay-offs

by on08 July 2015

Cost cutting

AMD is morphing into a new company and it doesn’t help that the Q2 2015 APU sales is weaker than expected.

We have already mentioned that weaker than expected APU sales and AMD's Q2 sales warning have created a huge drop in share value for the company.

Our well informed industry sources confirmed that AMD will have another round of layoffs that will be announced very soon. We don’t have many more details what sort of jobs might be in jeopardy, but marketing and sales might be effected, as well as some less profitable parts of company. We don’t want to speculate about positions and numbers, so we will have to wait and see.

The next round of redundancies in AMD is a good thing on the long run, as it will cut the operating cost of the company and will help the company to focus on things that might earn it more money. The rest of the year for AMD sales won't be great, as Intel has a dominant notebook / desktop chip and Nvidia is putting a lot of pressure on AMD in the sub $399 market, as it simply has more polished product to offer.

AMD as a company has been survivor for years, so we don’t think that Qualcomm will acquire it as the latest rumor suggested, but the news that Microsoft might be interested makes some sense.
