Intel made a mistake when it dropped XScale

In a
video posted by TechPulse360, VMware CEO Paul Maritz shared his thoughts on x86 chips, and as you may expect, he didn't have many good things to say about them.

"Consumer devices came along and there was one problem with the x86 instruction set. All of that complexity in there, accumulated over the years, meant it's a power hog. It loves electricity," said Maritz. "In consumer devices like phones you can't have that. Battery life becomes paramount."

Maritz worked as software and tools developer at Intel, before spending 14 years at Microsoft prior to joining VMware last year. He also talked about Intel's StrongARM processor, which eventually evolved into XScale. He claims Intel deopped out of the XScale business because the devices were "low-end, low-power, low-profit." Then, Intel realized it had to get back into the market.

Intel clams that Maritz is "not privy of all of Intel's future plans."
