As if ultrabooks didn’t have it bad enough
Building on the success of its ultrathin MacBook Air series, Apple is said to be testing a 15-inch ultrathin that could show up just in time to make ultrabooks’ lives a bit more miserable.
According to Appleinsider, Apple is finishing up testing on 15-inch ultrathin LCDs, which are a crucial component of the design. Apple already has more than four years experience with the MacBook Air series, so it is safe to assume it has the rest of the design covered already.
The news comes just a week after Apple updated its MacBook Pro lineup with faster Sandy Bridge chips. The new 15-inch ultrathin could steal some Pro customers, or even MacBook Air lovers who could do with more screen acreage.
As for the PC world, there is hardly anything the rumoured 15-incher would compete against. Intel partners are having trouble marketing 11.6- and 13.3-inch ultrabooks and there’s no talk of larger models just yet. The only vaguely similar concept that comes to mind is MSI’s old X600, a thin CULV-based 15.6-inch notebook that was discontinued almost two years ago.
