Motorola Razr 2022 is here with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

Improved 6.7-inch foldable OLED, better camera systems, and more

Motorola held a big event in China today revealing three new smartphones, but all eyes were fixed on the latest flagship foldable, the Razr 2022. The new Razr got Qualcomm's flagship SoC, an improved and larger main screen, better cameras, and more, but will it be enough to take on Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip4?

The new Motorola Razr 2022 is built around a foldable 6.7-inch OLED screen and there are some design changes as this time around, Motorola ditched the iconic chin at the bottom, and thanks to a new hinge system, it allows the phone to be almost completely closed when folded.

The new Razr 2022 comes with a 6.7-inch OLED (most likely with FHD+ resolution), a 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and DC dimming. The secondary screen did not get updated so it is still a 2.7-inch P-OLED panel with 800x600 resolution.

The biggest update is that Motorola now used Qualcomm's flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which should be a major upgrade compared to the Snapdragon 765G on the Razr 5G, launched back in 2020. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is paired up with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of internal storage.

Motorola also updated the main dual-module camera system, which now comes with the main 50-megapixel 1/1.55", 1.0µm sensor with PDAF and OIS, behind an f/1.8 lens. There is a second 13-megapixel 1.12µm sensor behind an f/2.2 ultrawide lens. The front camera sits behind a center-placed punch-hole, and it has been upgraded to a 32-megapixel sensor.

The camera systems on the Razr 2022 are ahead of the Galaxy Z Flip4, at least on paper, so hopefully, we'll see some comparison shots soon.

The rest of the specifications include stereo speakers, usual connectivity options, an under-display fingerprint optical sensor, and a 3,500mAh battery that will have support for 33W fast charging.

Unfortunately, Motorola did not reveal any details about global availability but the price in China, where it will be available as of August 15, is perfect to give Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip4 a run for its money.  The Motorola Razr 2022 starts at CNY 5,999 ($890) for the 8GB/128GB version, and goes up to CNY 7,299 ($1,100) for 12GB/512GB version.
