Quick Charge 5.0 tops 50 percent battery in five minutes

Qualcomm ups the charging game

Qualcomm has been stuck with Quick Charge 4 and 4+ for the last few years and let a lot of players, predominantly from China, to surpass its charging speeds by a lot. Now Quick Charge 5 is about to change that as the new standard promises to charge 50 percent battery in five minutes at 100W maximal capability.

The new standard will start with Xiaomi which already announced a 100W charging capable device and it will probably be embraced by many in the Qualcomm ecosystem.

Quick Charge 5.0 supports 100 Watts and keeps the battery 10 degrees Celsius cooler and 70 percent more efficient compared to Quick Charge 4. The new standard surpasses significantly the Power Delivery standard that stops at a quite good 60W.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 supports 3.3 and 20 Volts, with 3.3 or 5 Amps of current but some bulkier charger might allow more than five Amps current.

Full charge in 15 minutes

Fifty percent in just five minutes sounds great and it only takes 15 minutes to charge the 4500 battery all the way. The method Qualcomm managed to achieve these speeds is that the 4500 mAh battery is split in two cells. So Quick Charge 5 charges two 2,250 mAh batteries simultaneously and manages to achieve the new speeds.

Three cell batteries are also supported, and George Paparrizos, Director of product management, said that these are new batteries that will come with the upcoming devices. Xiaomi is the first to announce its support for 100W and now Quick Charge 5.0

Quick Charge 5 supports eight levels of voltage protection, three levels of current protection, three levels of thermal protection, and three timer protections together with overvoltage protection at 25 V.

45W with single cell battery

There will be two charging controllers SMB1396 and MSB1398 supporting wireless and wired standards as well as single and double cell batteries. In case the OEM choses a single cell battery it will be limited to maximal 45W charging speed, still quite good -  and OEM will need two cells to get to 15 minutes for zero to 100 percent for a 4500 mAh battery. Wireless speed will depend on OEMs abilities to cool the wireless coils but the total 100W can be delivered all the way to the power coil.

Snapdragon 865 and 865+ support the standard but it takes a special accessory to make its possible and probably some power components to enable it, so it is unlikely that any existing phones will charge at these speeds. This will come with new phones expected this fall and later.

Quick Charge 5, our fastest and most versatile charging solution, will enable consumers to enjoy their devices for longer periods of time, without worrying about the time required to recharge. We are proud to expand our technology portfolio and make accessible 100W+ charging a commercial reality”, said Ev Roach, VP Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We work closely with manufacturers to create industry-leading devices that meet consumers’ demand for more immersive and accessible mobile experiences.”
