Qualcomm starts 5G laptop era

The Always Connected PC (ACPC) initiative and Snapdragon 8cx with 5G modem have enabled what will go down in history as the first 5G enabled laptop. The Lenovo Flex 5G is available at Verizon in the US.

The first-ever 5G laptop will sell for $1399.99 retail price or $58.33 for 24 months at Verizon, and it will require a Verizon data plan. Lenovo and Verizon promise that the machine can stay in stand by for 12 days and have a usage time up to 25.67 hrs. Qualcomm and Lenovo showed it the first time at Computex 19, a year ago

Despite the obvious Snapdragon 8cx, it supports 8 GB LPDDR4X 1866MHz RAM and 256GB UFS 3.0 storage, 14” FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS touchscreen, 400 nits, 72 percent color gamut, HD 720p with privacy cover and Hybrid Infrared (IR), Windows 10 Pro. The machine will enable video playback up to 25 hours and voice assistants, including Siri, Google Assistant, Bixby, Alexa Hands-Free, and Alexa button press supported, it's claimed.

The machine supports 5G NG n260, n261 bands and 4G LT B2, B4, B5, B7, B12, B13, B17, B25, B26, B38, B41, B66, B71WCDMA B2, B4, B5 bands and UMTS: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 19LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 66, 715G: n1, n2, n3, n5, n8, n12, n20, n28, n38, n41, n66, n71, n77, n78, n79, n260, n261.

Availability is fuzzy. You can order one today, but Verizon claims to ship them on July 8, which is not so long from now. Analyzing the price, it adds close to $400 on top of the Samsung Galaxy Book S or Surface X Pro, both 4G and based on the same Snapdragon 8cx platform.

Lenovo was selling the same machine at its website, but it marks it as sold out. It was selling it for $100 more compared to Verizon. The Lenovo Flex 5G is Lenovo’s first Snapdragon 8CX machine and a successor to rather nice Lenovo Miix based on Snapdragon 835 from a few years ago.

The company also said it expected to see the 5G laptop in select geographies and through EE in the UK, Sunrise in Switzerland and CMCC in China later this year.
