Samsung confirms Snapdragon 855 is its 5G answer

by on04 December 2018

Coming in 1H 2019

Samsung’s Justin Denison, SVP of product strategy and marketing in the US,  confirmed that the 5G Samsung phone comes with a Snapdragon 855 SoC and obviously using a Snapdragon X50 modem.

This is a big commitment as Samsung is doing its own version of 5G but it looks like Qualcomm is still faster than its competition. Justin mentioned that Samsung expects the 5G video call across the world with very low latency, crystal clear picture, no lag, and great audio.

The phone is expected in the first half of 2019 and will enable speeds of download that will let you download years’ worth of your favorite TV shows very quickly.

There is a live demo of the Samsung 5G enabled phone with Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon X50 5G modem and we will try to get to it after the end of the keynote.

Based on the information we gathered from our industry friends, the Galaxy S10 is expected to ship in April 2019, but we are not sure when the 5G version comes to market, hopefully in the same timeframe.

The fact that Samsung is showing the phone on a live 5G network from Verizon is impressive and means that its smartphones are just around the corner. You have to build it and they will come, as this is a typical chicken and egg problem.

5G networks start with 5G external devices that are expected to evolve very soon and move to phones.

Samsung is the first of many to announce this and definitely one of the first to showcase its 5G phone live here in Maui, Hawaii.
