Google leaks Nexus 5 on Play Store

by on18 October 2013

$349 as rumoured

Leaky Google has done it again. The new Nexus 5 has been leaked on Play Store, with some official press shots/renders and the official price tag.

Last year Google had a few issues with the Nexus 4 launch as well. It was leaked so much that there was really no point in announcing it, and mother nature also made sure that its New York event didn’t go as planned. We said it countless times before and we’ll say it again - Google really needs to learn how to launch phones.

The Play Store listing puts the Nexus 5 at $349. That’s the price for the black 16GB version, which we suspect will be the entry level SKU. That’s a pretty good price for an unlocked flagship phone with a 1080p 5-inch screen, LTE and a powerful 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800. In fact, it is very cheap indeed, much like the old Nexus 4, $349 just can’t buy a flagship Android phone, unless you’re in China and happen to like the Xiaomi Mi3 or ZTE Geek.

The launch is reportedly scheduled for late October and the phone should be the first device to ship with Android 4.4 KitKat. The press render also shows a new, cleaner start pane, with several redesigned icons and new colours. The soft buttons are no longer on a black background, there’s no line separating quick access icons from the rest of the screen and the system colour (time, battery) is now white, the cyan introduced in ICS seems to be gone for good.

It’s not a huge redesign, but it is refreshing since Android 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 brought hardly any aesthetic improvements over ICS 4.0. And the looks? Well it's nothing spectacular, we're not sure about the oversized lens, but other than that it's minimalistic and simple. Oh, and the hardware buttons are now flat, not rounded like on the Nexus 4, which is a good thing in our book.
