Juniper Research found that shipments grew 13 percent sequentially and Samsung came out on top, with an estimated 72 million smartphones sold last quarter, or 31 percent of the market. Samsung’s brilliant quarter was fuelled by strong Galaxy S4 sales, estimated at 20 million units in the first two months of sales.
Apple also had a surprisingly good quarter, beating analysts’ expectations and shipping 31 million iPhones in Q2. However, it actually lost ground quarter-on-quarter and it also lost market share.
LG sold 12 million phones, up 114 percent year-on-year. Lenovo, ZTE and Huawei were all up, shipping more than 10 million units each. Nokia sold 7.4 million Lumias, while BlackBerry managed to ship an estimated 6.9 million phones.
However, average selling prices (ASPs) have fallen to $375, down from $450 in early 2012. This means the market for high-end gear is seeing less growth than the low- and mid-range.
