Google I/O 2012: Play music or Video on your TV or stereo

Google's Nexus Q is a new device that meant to stream video and music to your TV and stereo. It streams the content directly from the Play Store cloud.

The heart of this cute spherical devices is an OMAP 4460 dual-core processoe, the same chip used in Google's Galaxy Nexus. It packs an 25W audio amplifier for music and 1080p support via mini HDMI. It supports dual-band WiFi and Ethernet, as well as Bluetooth, micro USB for general hackability and future support. People are really excited about the hackability aspect and we can see their point. If we go to so much trouble to customize our phones, there's no reason not to do the same to our TVs.

However, Google believes social music sharing is the killer feature. People can share music from their devices and they appear on your device. Your friends can even instantly play the song they choose. Not sure how this is going to go down with Big Content, not after the hackability part.

The only issue with this is that Google management has horrible music taste. Basically you can play the movies from Google Play store, and for the time being it seems it has to be on the Google's servers. It will stream all stuff from YouTube as well, but there was no metion of streaming personal content, which kind of sucks and we are quite sure someone will make it work sooner rather than later.

Nexus Q will be available from Google play in mid-July for $299. The price sounds insanely high, it would be a great thing if it was some 200 bucks less.

Here is how it works in a video.
