Samsung dominates dual-core chip market

Qualcomm looking to make a comeback

According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung dominated the dual-core smartphone processor market in 2011, with a commanding 60 percent share.

Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Nvidia trailed with Snapdragon, OMAP4 and Tegra chips, but even their combined share does not come close to Samsung. It is estimated that dual-core chips made up for about 20 percent of all smartphone processors shipped last year.

Although Qualcomm seized 16 percent of the market, analysts believe it stands a good chance of gaining share in 2012 thanks to S4 chips with integrated LTE. After an early lead Nvidia’s Tegra 2 is losing momentum and Nvidia is shifting its focus to quad core chips. Samsung has also launched a quad-core part, used in the flagship Galaxy S III handset.

However, we could see renewed interest in dual-core parts once new A15-based chips become available.
