TI on Ice Cream Sandwich reference claim

by on10 October 2011

Working closely, they say

We’ve asked Texas Instrument if they are the reference platform for Google’s highly anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich and we got an answer, of course not the one we hoped for.

TI said that they cannot publicly confirm or deny involvement with Ice Cream Sandwich, let alone they didn’t even want to touch the subject that they are the reference platform for ICS, Android 4.0. However they did send us a comment that OMAP team has been “actively involved in Android development since day one and continues to work with Google to optimize the Android operating system on the OMAP platform.” This is something that it’s kind of obvious.

Our industry sources have already said that Texas Instrument OMAP 4 is the reference chip for Android 4.0, at least on phones, but probably not for tablets. Last time we heard was that Motorola Xoom gets the first Ice Cream Sandwich update in the tablet work and many can remember that this was the first Nvidia Tegra 2 based tablet.

Ice Cream Sandwich should be out before the end of November and last delay of Nexus Prime was most likely not out of respect for the loss of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs, as Google and Samsung want to do some last minute polishing and launch an even stronger Android 4 OS.
