Luxury phones are packed with last year's technology

by on06 July 2011

So why are people buying them
If you fly through Dubai, or happen to visit some fairly swanky shops you might find some smartphones retailing for huge amounts of cash. To pick up such phones you need to spend about €5,000.

But according to Wired such phones are a complete waste of money and packed with technology which is so old that it might as well send your messages by pigeon. For example if you spend €5,000 on a Tag Heuer phone all you will get is an 800×400 3.5-inch screen, a 5MP camera, the usual radios and Android 2.2 Froyo, an OS first announced in May 2010, all running in just 256MB RAM. I have all of that with a GB of ram for about 100 euro.

All the money has been spent on the bling. It is all Calfskin, alligator skin, diamonds, titanium, gold. But from a technology point of view it is severely anachronistic, which is odd for a watch company. The only people who are likely to have the cash and are dumb enough to buy one are Eastern European mafia types who lack necks but seem to be paid a lot of cash to look threatening.

For some reason no one has twigged that the more money you spend on a phone, the less in touch you are with technology.
