Is part of the RIM delays due to Snapdragon?

New code necessary in order to support the chip
After a more in-depth review of the recent RIM earnings call, we think we might have figured out what this delay is all about. This has been a bit of a mystery, but we do know that going forward RIM will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. This decision mirrors a lot of other companies, so it really isn’t a big surprise and it is a solid business decision.

The rub, however, is that it takes time to write the necessary new code to support the Snapdragon’s chipset and take advantage of the features of the new processor and associated chips. Basically, the BlackBerry OS has to be ported to Snapdragon and new code is necessary to do this; and it takes time to develop and test the necessary new code.

While RIM has acknowledged that some devices are going to be delayed and others pushed a bit farther out, it is still estimated that RIM should have about seven new devices that will be running BlackBerry OS 7 released before the summer of 2012. The real question is how much the delay is going to hurt RIM while they overcome these issues to get these new devices out the door.
