Bluetooth accessory is going to happen

For the past year or two we have heard whispers about a mysterious BlackBerry accessory from the land of RIM that seemed a bit far reaching to be true. Nonetheless, we are finally hearing from our sources that a new third-party company has, in fact, been working closely with RIM to develop a Bluetooth-based BlackBerry Watch accessory.

From what our sources are telling us, the actual basic design is finished and testing for this smartwatch has started. From what we are being told, the watch is being developed not by RIM, but by a new accessory company who designed it for the BlackBerry from the ground up.

The smartwatch will use Bluetooth connectivity to get messages and information from your BlackBerry. So you can use your watch in a meeting without having to take out and actually use your BlackBerry. Of course, in order to make it useful the smartwatch is optimized for battery life by sporting the latest in low power OLED technology; and the use of OLED will give the user a razor sharp text and bright screen. The user will be able to get previews of messages and notifications from your BlackBerry as well as standard watch type functions.

It seems up for debate if the smartwatch for BlackBerry will be called the inPulse, or if this is more of a codename for the project. It is also unknown at this time if the smartwatch API will be made available to developers to work with third-party applications beyond RIM-authored applications. We think it is a cool idea, if they can pull it off and make the price for it reasonable. Stay tuned, as we suspect that this will be one of the big BlackBerry stories of next year, as our sources suggest an official announcement before the end of the year is unlikely.
