ViewSonic to enter Smartphone market

by on12 May 2009

Wants 3 to 300-inch product line

We're not sure if now is a good time to enter the Smartphone market, but ViewSonic seems to think so as the company has issued a press release to the matter. Initially ViewSonic is looking at going after the Chinese market, but Europe an the US is set to follow at a later stage.

ViewSonic wants to have a 3 to 300-inch product portfolio and a 3G Smartphone seems to be what ViewSonic thinks is the missing link in its product line-up. ViewSonic has made PDA's in the past, although not with much success. Hopefully their new Smartphone products will be vast improvements on their PDA's, but at this stage is too early to tell as no details of any devices were revealed.

ViewSonic seems to think that it can apply its knowledge in the display market to make a great Smartphone, but we're not sure how the two connects. James Chu, chairman and chief executive officer of ViewSonic is quoted saying "This is an important strategic step for ViewSonic, as it allows us to apply our display technology to an even larger and rapidly growing worldwide market."

Hopefully ViewSonic will have something ready to show during Computex early next month and we'll make sure to pass by the ViewSonic booth to see what they have on offer.
