Dan Dare technology is with us

LG has
been showing off what it described as the world's first watch-shaped commercial mobile video phone.

In a press release LG said that the "3G watch phone" model has a touch-screen dialling system with a camera and a speaker built in to enable users to make video calls over a 3G connection. The kit can recognize voices, transforms text to speech, has a Bluetooth function and plays MP3 music.

It is a pretty clunky watch.  It has a 3.63-centimeter screen and is 13.9 millimeters thick.  So, the arm you wear it on is going to be a wee bit stronger than the other one and you are going to need sharp eyes to make out a picture, but it is still the sort of technology Dan Dare had in the Eagle comics.

It will be on display at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from January 8th to 11th. LG Electronics said it plans to launch the handset in the E.U. next year.
